Lesley, the loopback connector is used in conjunction with the Main Serial Port Test in Diagnostics Mode on the AccuVote-OS.  It is connected to the 9-pin COMM PORT connector at the back of the AccuVote-OS while the test is in progress, crossing pins 2 and 3, in order for outgoing transmissions to be received back over the same port.
