Pulp Unix
The Complete Version
<Neilus> Well, it breaks down like this. Its legal to own a BSD-like
UNIX, it's legal to use a BSD-like UNIX, but if you want to work with
UNIX outside the ISP community you need System V skills. People are
happy for you to use your Linuxs and your FreeBSDs but only at home
or in certain designated places.
<Vijay> Ah man, I ain't leaving the ISPs. I just aint leaving.
<Neil> Yeah man I'd hate it the most too, but it doesn't hurt to know
a little about it. But you know what the funniest thing about
companies outside the UK is?
<Vijay> What?
<Neil> It's the big differences. I mean they got the same kind of
techies over there but they all use NT and have C++ or Windows API
based skills.
<Vijay> Example?
<Neil> Bigfoot are entirely NT based. No UNIX at all.
<Vijay> So let me get this straight - they use Windows NT, so what
if they nstall new software? They have to reboot and the web server
goes down? Not quite like UNIX is it? So you can't massage you way
out by clicking on start?
<Neil> Of course you can massage your way out of it but that don't
mean a thing.
<Vijay> What do you mean it don't mean a thing? You have to reboot
and thats why Microsaft is crap! It dont support virtual device
drivers!
<Neilus> I'm the Operating Fucking Systems Massage Master
<Vijay> Ok ok point taken.
<Mattski> Y'know what they put on Sparcs in America?
<Neilus> Wassat, man?
<Mattski> Solaris, they fucking drown em in that shit.
<Neilus> Eeugh.
<Mattski> And y'know what they call Solaris in America?
<Vijay> They don't call it Solaris?
<Mattski> Naw man - they're American - they wouldn't know what the
fuck a real operating system is. They call it the "future".
<Vijay> Hell, we should have shotguns for this kinda deal.
