The Ugly


This is a way of drinking beer that needs to be experienced by everyone. A friend of mine told me about it, and at first I wouldn't try it. However, once curiosity got the better of me and I actually got one of these down my neck, there was no turning back - these things rock.

Ingredients:

1 glass of tomato juice (about .2 litre)
1 pint (or litre) of beer
a pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Drink about three or four centimetres of beer from the glass.
  2. Slowly (very slowly) pour the tomato juice down the side of the glass of beer. The tomato juice should slide down past the beer and settle in the bottom. This can sometimes take a couple of tries to get right - the angle of the beer glass must be roughly 45 degrees, and the tomato juice should sit at the bottom of the glass like the wax in a lava lamp.
  3. Let the beer settle for a second or two, to make sure the tomato juice is not mixed with the beer at all.
  4. Get the salt, and put it in the beer. The beer will froth a lot, so quickly drink the whole beer down, including the tomato juice sitting in the bottom of the glass. It is extremely important that you drink the entire glass at once, as fast as possible. Violent puking is highly likely if you do not.
  5. If done properly, you will be left with a mild tomato / salt taste in your mouth, actually quite pleasant, and you've just downed a beer. A great way to start off the evening (or morning)!

note: if after several uglies, your tomato pouring skills start waning and you notice the beer mixing with the tomato juice, you can overcome this problem by leaving the ugly to stand, completely untouched, for 5 to 10 minutes.
