One of my problems with the recorded
voice option is that the database with audio files is so large, that it won't
fit onto a 1.44MB floppy disk. And the way 3.12.x works is that all
database diskettes are the same whether they are VIBS Ballot Stations or Regular
AV-TS Ballot Stations. So if you use only one VIBS unit, you end up having
to use 120MB Imation Super Diskettes for every Ballot Station
(which between $11 to $15 each). This situation happened in El Paso,
TX in their March primary.
The concept was to have the same
image on any diskette so it didn't matter what machine you plugged it into (VIBS
of non-VIBS). Great concept but your database disks cost 10 to 20 times
more than they should.
I don't know if test-to-speech can
improve the situation or make it worse. I have three
suggestions:
- keep databases below 1.44MB even
with audio files,
- split VIBS and non-VIBS so you can
have databases with and without audio files(i.e., non-VIBS use 1.44MB floppies
and VIBS use 120MB Super Disks),
- Up the cost to the customer to
purchase Imation Super Diskettes for every machine, plus spares. Also to
accumulate results, you'll need to add an Imation Super Disk Drive to
your PollBook computer.
Any other suggestions?
Ian

I think you may be misinterpreting Mike's message. The
new one doesn't have text to speech, it's better in that its completely
recorded voice. If your demonstrating anything, you want the new
recorded voice option. (my two cents)
